Do slat panels actually soundproof a room?
Short answer: no. Longer answer: they do something genuinely useful, it is just not the thing most people are buying them for.

Two different things with similar names
Almost all the confusion here comes from two words being used interchangeably when they describe opposite jobs.
- Sound absorption
- Reducing sound energy bouncing around inside a room. It makes a hard room feel calmer, cuts echo and reverberation, and makes voices clearer on a call. This is what slat panels do.
- Sound insulation
- Stopping sound passing through a wall to the room beyond. This is about mass, isolation and airtightness. This is what slat panels do not do.
Products are frequently marketed as "acoustic panels" without distinguishing the two, and plenty of listings use the word "soundproofing" outright. If you buy them expecting to stop hearing next door, you will be disappointed, and the fitter who installed them will get the complaint.
Why they cannot block sound
Blocking airborne sound needs mass. A dense, heavy, airtight barrier is what stops sound transmitting, which is why a solid brick wall performs better than a stud partition, and why proper sound insulation involves heavy boards and dense mineral wool.
A slat panel is a few thin strips of timber or MDF on a felt backing. It weighs very little, and critically it is full of gaps by design — the spaces between the slats are what let sound reach the absorptive felt. A barrier with deliberate gaps in it is not a barrier.
What they are genuinely good at
Rooms where slat panelling makes a real, noticeable difference:
- Home offices with a hard floor, a desk and not much else — the classic echoey video-call room
- Open-plan spaces with large glazed areas, where speech sounds harsh
- Rooms with a lot of hard surfaces and minimal soft furnishing
- Media rooms, where reducing reflections improves how a soundbar actually sounds
In those spaces it is a good buy, and it looks considerably better than the foam tiles people otherwise resort to. It is worth being clear that the benefit is real — this page is not arguing against slat panels, only against a claim made about them.
What to do if the problem is actually noise transfer
If you can hear the television next door, conversation through a party wall, or footsteps from above, panelling of any kind is not the answer. What works is some combination of:
- An independent or resiliently mounted stud wall built in front of the existing one
- Dense acoustic mineral wool in the cavity
- Two layers of heavy board with staggered joints
- Acoustic sealant at every junction — gaps let sound through, and they undo everything else
- For impact noise from above, treatment at the floor rather than the wall
It costs more, it loses you a few centimetres of room, and it is a different trade. But it works, and it is worth getting proper advice rather than hoping panelling will do it.
Common questions
So slat panels are useless for sound?
Not at all — they are genuinely good at what they do. In a hard room with a wooden floor, large windows and little soft furnishing, slat panels noticeably reduce echo and make speech clearer. That is a real benefit worth paying for. It is just a different benefit from blocking noise.
What would actually stop noise from the next room?
Mass, isolation and sealing gaps. In practice that means an independent or resiliently mounted stud wall, dense insulation in the cavity, two layers of heavy board with staggered joints, and acoustic sealant everywhere the wall meets floor, ceiling and sides. It loses you floor space and costs considerably more than panelling.
Does the felt backing make a difference?
Yes, for absorption. The felt behind the slats is what absorbs sound energy in the room, and the gaps between slats let sound reach it. That is why slat panels work better acoustically than solid panelling. It still does not add meaningful mass, which is what blocking sound requires.
Would a gap behind the panels help?
For absorption, slightly — an air gap behind an absorber generally improves how it performs at lower frequencies. For blocking sound between rooms, no. A gap on its own without mass and isolation does very little, and in some configurations a small sealed cavity can make things marginally worse.
