Shaker panelling is built from lengths of MDF fixed to the wall to form frames, with the wall itself showing through the middle of each panel. That is worth understanding, because it means the wall inside each frame is on display. If the plaster is poor, panelling will not hide it — it will frame it.
The thing that separates good shaker panelling from the version that looks stuck on is the setting out. Panel widths should relate to the wall rather than being whatever fell out of dividing it by four, and the layout has to account for the door, the window, the radiator and the light switch. A fitter who measures the wall and then draws it out before cutting anything is doing the part that actually matters.
Height is the other decision, and it is worth taking advice on. Dado height suits a standard modern room; three-quarter height to a picture rail suits a taller Victorian one; full height makes a real statement but can close in a small room. In a Telford new-build at 2.4 metres and a Shrewsbury townhouse at three metres, the same design reads completely differently.

Shaker panelling: common questions
Will panelling hide my uneven walls?
Partly. The frames themselves can be packed and levelled so they read straight, but with shaker panelling the wall shows through the middle of every panel, so a poor surface is still visible inside the frame. If the wall is in bad condition, it is worth getting it made good first — or choosing a style with a solid backing board instead.
MDF or solid timber?
MDF for almost all painted panelling, and that is not a compromise. It is stable, it does not move with the seasons, it has no grain to fill and it takes paint better than timber does. Solid timber earns its place where the panelling is being stained rather than painted, in a listed building, or where it needs to match existing historic joinery.
What happens to my skirting board?
Three options. The panelling can sit on top of the existing skirting, which is quickest but can look bolted-on. The skirting can come off and be refitted over the panelling, which usually looks best. Or it can be replaced entirely with a deeper profile that suits the new depth. The middle option is the most common and it is worth asking which one a quote assumes.
How long does it take?
A single feature wall is often a day for the fitting, plus painting time on top. A full room, or a hall, stairs and landing, is realistically several days. Painting is what people forget — priming, caulking every joint, filling and two topcoats is not a couple of hours.
