Can I hang a TV on a panelled wall?
Yes, but not on the panelling itself. MDF panels are decorative and will not carry a television. The bracket needs fixing back to the structure — a stud, a noggin fitted specifically for it, or the masonry behind a dot-and-dab wall with the void packed out. That has to be planned before the panelling goes on, because retrofitting it afterwards means taking panels off. Say in your enquiry that a TV is going up and roughly how big it is.
How do I tell whether my wall is dot-and-dab or stud?
Knock across it. A stud wall sounds hollow almost everywhere with occasional solid points where the studs are, roughly every 400 to 600mm. Dot-and-dab sounds hollow in patches and solid where the adhesive dabs are, in a more irregular pattern. Solid masonry sounds dull and dead everywhere.
