Slat panels come as manufactured units: timber slats bonded to an acoustic felt backing, typically around 2.4 metres long, cut to fit and fixed to the wall. They go up quickly compared with built-up panelling, and they bring warmth and texture into rooms that can otherwise feel flat.
Fixing is where the care goes. The panels need to sit flat, the joints between them have to be planned so a seam does not land in the middle of the most visible part of the wall, and cutting around sockets needs to follow the slat line rather than hacking through it. Done well the wall reads as continuous; done badly you see every join.
Because slat panels are usually a manufactured product, the material cost is a larger proportion of the total than with built-up panelling, and the labour is lower. That changes the shape of a quote: fewer hours, more material.

Slat wall panelling: common questions
Will slat panelling soundproof my room?
No. It absorbs sound inside the room, which reduces echo and makes a hard room feel calmer — a real and worthwhile effect. It does not stop sound travelling through the wall to the next room. If your problem is hearing the neighbours or a teenager through a party wall, slat panels will not fix it, and you need proper sound insulation instead.
Can I mount a TV on slat panelling?
Yes, but the bracket must fix back to the structure behind — a stud, a purpose-fitted noggin, or the masonry with any void packed out. It cannot hang off the slats or the felt backing. This needs planning before the panels go up, so say in your enquiry that a TV is going on the wall.
Is it real wood?
Depends entirely on what you buy. Some panels are real timber veneer on an MDF slat; cheaper ones are a printed foil or laminate. They look similar in a photograph and quite different in a room with daylight raking across them. Ask what is being quoted, because the price gap is significant.
How do you deal with the joins between panels?
Good practice is to set out so the joins fall in less conspicuous places and to keep the slat spacing continuous across a seam, so the eye reads it as one wall. Poor practice is starting at one end and letting the last panel land wherever it lands. It is worth asking how a fitter intends to set the wall out.
