Panelling on uneven or bowed walls
Good news for anyone in an older Shropshire property: panelling is one of the better answers to a wall that will never be flat. It just has to be built out rather than stuck on.

Test your wall in ten seconds
Stand at one end of the wall with your eye close to it and sight along the surface towards the far corner, the way you would sight along a piece of timber. Bows, humps and hollows that are completely invisible face-on show up immediately.
Do it at about waist height and again near the ceiling — walls in older properties frequently lean, so the top and bottom can be in quite different places. If you have a long spirit level or a straight batten, holding it against the wall gives you the same information with a number attached.
Whatever you find, it is worth writing in your enquiry. It is the difference between a quote that survives the first site visit and one that does not.
Why it matters more than you would think
Panelling components are manufactured dead straight and cut square. A wall is neither. Fix a straight panel frame directly to a bowed wall and it either follows the bow — so the panelling looks wrong rather than the wall — or it bridges the hollow and leaves a gap you can see daylight through at the edges.
The fix is to stop treating the wall as the reference surface. Battens are fixed to the wall and packed out at each fixing point until their front faces all sit in one true plane. The panelling then fixes to the battens, not to the wall, and the result is flat regardless of what is behind it.
What battening out involves
- Find the high point of the wall — everything is set from that
- Fix battens vertically or horizontally depending on the panelling design
- Pack behind each fixing so every batten face sits in the same plane
- Check across the battens with a long level or a string line
- Scribe the edges where the panelling meets the adjacent wall or ceiling, so there is no gap
- Fix the panelling to the battens
It is not complicated work but it is slow and fiddly, and it is entirely invisible in the finished result — which is exactly why it gets left out of cheap quotes.
The trade-offs
- Depth
- Battening plus panelling typically projects 25 to 50mm from the original wall. Fine on one wall in a normal room; worth measuring in a small one or where a door opens against the wall.
- Skirting and architrave
- Both now sit proud of the new surface, so skirting usually comes off and goes back on top, and architraves may need packing out to suit the new depth.
- Sockets
- They have to come forward by the full depth of batten plus panel, which means extending back boxes — electrical work under Part P.
- Cost
- More material and noticeably more labour. A quote that prices a bowed period wall the same as a flat modern one has not looked properly.
Which styles cope best

Two things to check before panelling an old wall
The second is what the wall is made of. Solid walls in older properties were built to let moisture move through and evaporate, and sealing one behind an impermeable board and paint can cause problems that were not there before. On a genuinely old solid-walled building it is worth asking the question rather than assuming.
Common questions
How uneven is too uneven?
There is no fixed number, because it is about what battening out would cost you in depth and time rather than a limit being exceeded. A wall 10mm out over its length is routine. A wall 40mm out can still be panelled, it just needs deeper battens, and the panelling will project noticeably further into the room.
Should I get the wall replastered first?
Sometimes it is the better answer, particularly if the wall is in poor condition as well as uneven and you are choosing shaker panelling where the wall shows through each frame. If the wall is sound but simply not flat, battening is usually cheaper and quicker than replastering.
Does battening out lose me much room?
Typically 25 to 50mm including the panelling, depending on how far out the wall is. On one wall in a normal room it is imperceptible. Across a small room panelled on all four walls it adds up, and it is worth measuring before committing.
Can I fix panelling straight to a lath and plaster wall?
With care. Old lath and plaster can be fragile, fixings need to find the timber studs behind rather than relying on the plaster, and hammering can loosen plaster elsewhere on the wall. It is very doable — it just needs someone who has worked on old buildings rather than someone who fires fixings in at 400mm centres and hopes.
